1. Definitions: Base is the lower part of the fraction
Portion is the top part of a fraction
Rate is the decimal form of the fraction or a percentage amount. Percentage is the decimal multiplied by a 100
2. Turn a percentage into a fraction 15% = 15/100
3. Turn the problem into an equation
444 = the portion
x = the base which is unknown
15/100 = rate
Equation
15/100 = 444 / x
4. Solve for x
100/15 = x / 444
100/15 * 444 = x
2960 = x
5. check your answer. 0.15 * 2960 = 444
To solve with decimals
0.15 = 444 / x
0.15 * x = 444
x = 444 / 0.15
x = 2960
Alternative solution
0.15 = 444 / x
1/0.15 = x / 444
1/0.15 * 444 = x
444/0.15 = x
2960 = x
