Answer

C is the total basketball cards that Jim have

Erin has : 1/2C = C/2

Brother has : 1/4C = C/4

Left : 75 cards

The expression will be:

C/2 + C/4 + 75 = C

C - C/2 - C/4 = 75

(4C - 2C - C)/4 = 75

4C - 3C = 75 x 4

C = ( 70 + 5 ) x 4

C = ( 70 x 4 ) + ( 5 x 4 )

C = 280 + 20

C = 300

So Jim started with 300 cards

He gave 150 cards to Erin : 300/2= 150

He gave his brother 75 cards : 300/4= 75

And he had left 75 cards : 300 - (150 + 75) = 300 - 225 = 75
