Let's define x as the number that we want to tripple: 3x

If we get the same result by adding it to 28 therefore: 28 + x = 3x

28 = 3x - x  ;  28 = 2x  ; x = 28 / 2  ;  x = 14

To check the answer:

3 x 14 = 42 and 28 + 14 = 42 same answer.
