Lesson Steps:

To get the distance on a co-ordinate plane you use the Pythagorean Theorem.

1. Draw a line horizontally from one of the points towards the other point
2. Draw a line vertically to the other point
3. Where the two lines cross over will be your right angled triangle
4. Measure the distance of each side of the triangle
5. Use the a and b values in the formula a^2 + b^2 = c^2
For example if you points where 0,3 and 4,0 the sides would be 3 high and 4 long on the x axis.
3^2 + 4^2 = c^2
6. Add the values 9 + 16 = 25 = c^2
7. Take the square root of the total. The square root of 25 is 5
