Ishmael's father used to say to him (about being a man) "If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen. If there is nothing good left in the destiny of a person, he or she will die." His parents did teach him a lot about becoming a man, this one of the few quotes that I could find. He found manhood basically by believing in this quote and learning to cope with his loneliness and depression. He was able to keep them in his mind and keep them alive in his memory.
